Hmm, why won't this drive spin up?..

OK, I’m pissed off now. Un-fucking-believable.

I bought this drive last year but didn’t need it until today. I pulled it out of the box and it felt a little light and I noticed that the housing was unsnapped. Upon further examination I see that someone has yanked the 6TB drive that was originally inside and replaced it with a piece of scrap metal - no controller board, screws removed and platters exposed to the elements, no label.

Somehow I don’t think that Western Digital’s warranty covers fraud, and I can only hope that Target does the right thing and either gives me another drive or a refund. I bought it in good faith, hence not opening the box until today.

Inside job at the returns counter, perhaps? Any legal recourse?

You should be able to exchange it. It’s not a refund so they won’t give you much grief.

I was just watching a video of people in Russia buying stuff - drills, flashlights etc. Most of it made of chineseum. Dude bought a flashlight that is supposed to have 5 battery cells, but only 2 were real. Other 3 were filled with chinese sand.

I know it’s in Russian, just turn the volume down and watch it. You will get most of the gist from just watching video.

I guess what I am trying to say is that maybe that hard drive came like that from chinese knockoff western digital. like far western digital

I don’t think it came that way - if that is his original box, it has a ‘repackage’ sticker on it. I bet somebody bought it, swapped the working drive out for a shit, broken one, then returned it for a refund, meaning they got a 6TB drive for free.

I bet the return people never even opened the box.

Nah, just good old fashioned fraud on the part of the person that bought the drive then returned it.

What RallyDarkstrike said. That is my original box, and I bought returned merchandise under the assumption that I was getting what was listed on the box.

That video doesn’t quite apply in this case. I does remind me of some stuff my folks saw a few years ago on a trip to Vietnam. There was some knock-off merchandise co-branded with The North Face and Hello Kitty. Both are powerful brands, but the demographics for the two don’t really overlap...
